I am in awe of the many similarities of my trip even so far as to my one month journey to Mexico. It eludes me that I wouldnt have thought of all these things sooner, but nevertheless, I am finally settling into the fact of what it really is here. I do recommend a trip of this sort, but unless you are staying at a posh touristy resort, it's not going to be some relaxing beach vacation. However, it will find its way to change your life. Somehow I forgot to think about this. Here are some notes about my trip so far that I honestly do laugh at, so dont worry for me...
%no matter how much you shower, you will feel dirty within moments because the humidity is overwhelming, but it's ok because everyone else is just as sweaty as you
%you thought you would eat the best latino food ever, wrong! you eat what's safe...cereal, bananas, tons of cliff bars, er, nothing, gatorade and end up paying american prices because what locals would eat that stuff anyways so they jack up the prices
%the bad part about the bus ride is not that it's bumpy because that's not so bad, it's that youre sitting by some man for over 5 hours that you dont even know and you want to gasp every time the bus passes another vehicle because the oncoming car is way too close
%celebrating Independence Day thus far has consisted of the 7am bus coming at 8am, then not being off of the bus until 2pm, and not finding an open hostel until 4pm, yikes!
%you might never master converting a country's money into US dollars, so dont hurt yourself doing it, be patient
%fresh fruit and vegetables will rarely be swallowed by your mouth unless you want to get the runs, which is unfathomably more uncomfortable in a foreign bathroom than at home
%you have to pay money to get toilet paper for a public restroom...really??
%locals make money off of your tourism, so dont be resentful, but try not to buy into it too much
%new furniture, aint gonna happen anywhere
%bugs abound, love your bug spray!
%count your money twice before paying so you dont get ripped off or rip others off...celina tried to pay our server at pizza hut with 1000 colones instead of 10000 colones and we did not understand what he was trying to tell us until ten minutes later we recounted our money and he had told everyone in the restaurant what had happened and probably how cheap we were so he could get a translator, but no one spoke english.
%mucho gusto is quite the well used phrase. it means with much pleasure and we were told that 30 times easily today, 28 times at least at Pizza Hut where our waiters were like little robots
%toilet paper never gets flushed...it's hard to break a 22 year habit
%backpackers will always help backpackers, we met a young couple from Denmark who told us some good places to go and we had a few laughs together on the long bus ride
%even if you ask someone to repeat a phrase "otraves"\again then you have them speak more slowly "mas despacio" you may never understand because some people mumble horribly
%no matter where you are, laughter heals the soul..the tired, dirty, needs shower, food, and water soul
%twins can lead you to much more laughter than you thought possible. hurray!
I look forward to many more adventures soon. Celina and I are trying to figure out what the heck to do tomorrow. We might take a tour to Arenal where there are hot springs, volcanoes, hiking, and more beauty with one of the guys who works at our hostel on Sunday. We hope to go to Bocas del Toro on Mondayish in Panama and then work our way up the Caribbean coast and back to the airport by the 16th. It will be an adventure that evolves daily, that's for sure, but we sure do have each other to share it with and that is exciting since I only had myself to share with in Mexico!
